Help Picking the Right Binoculars

Looking for a new pair of binoculars?  As you can see we carry a wide variety of binoculars and range finders.  Binoculars that come in all shapes and sizes and depending on what you are going to use them for they come in all ranges of magnification and optical lens size. When you see the numbers 8X40 this is telling you the magnification and optical lens size. The 8X means that something is going appear 8 times larger than it would with the naked eye, the 40 indicates the optical lens (front lens) size of the binocular. The larger the optical lens size the more light it gathers, with a pair of 8X40 binoculars your field of vision is going to be wider and brighter then with a pair of 8X20 binoculars.

There are several other things to look for when purchasing a new pair of binoculars. Things like image stabilization and the types of prisms used. There are two types of prisms Porro and Roof. The differences are how the binoculars are made. The Porro prism is used in traditional binoculars and has a wider shoulder, the Roof prisms are the same as the Porro but have a more stream lined look and tend to be a little more expensive.  There are also water proof and water resistant brands which are good for observing marine life.

Image stabilization counter acts the natural unsteadiness of the hand when using the binoculars for a long period of time. This feature is important to have when you are using high magnification; it helps to keep the image much clearer. Binoculars with this feature are good to use when viewing from boats, aircraft, or moving vehicles. Another feature to consider is focusing. Binoculars come with either center focusing or individual focusing. The center focusing allows you to focus both eyepieces at the same time; this is a popular feature for birding, hunting or just general wildlife watching. Individual focusing allows you to focus each eyepiece separately; this option is good when watching or looking at the same thing for a long period of time and doesn’t require frequent focus adjustment.
